How to Prepare the Work Site If You Need to Hire a Crane

Posted on

Are you in charge of a public facility, which has a considerable amount of footfall on a daily basis? If so, you may be used to directing any necessary work while taking into account public activity and may be used to the risks associated with your job. Most of the time you can close off any areas when you need to perform some maintenance, and everything takes place at ground level due to the nature of the facility.

However, in this case, you have an unusual but nevertheless challenging task to perform internally at roof level and will need to bring in a crane in order to help you perform this. What extra steps do you need to take if you're going to be successful here, while always ensuring safety for the general public?

Going Into Detail

You will be used to developing a safety plan whenever you have to close off an area of the facility for necessary work, but in this case, it's going to be even more challenging as the risks are much higher.

Keep Clear

To begin with, your exclusion zone will need to be that bigger in order to give the machine plenty of room for it to manoeuvre, both at ground level and "up there." These cranes can swing with a pendulum action at the base and will need to extend outward when they are elevated, so you must ensure they don't come into contact with any part of the structure or its surroundings.

Don't forget as well, that you will need to deploy outriggers to help stabilise the machine and they can take up a lot of room when they are fully deployed. However, they're crucial to ensure stability, and you should be aware of their dimensions.

Extra Pair of Eyes

It's a good idea for you to bring in an independent inspector to make sure that the crane is structurally sound when it is ready to go. Each machine has its own limits, and you would do well to familiarise yourself with these before allowing any work to commence.

Experts Only

Remember, these machines require a fair degree of expertise, and you should always ensure that your operator is trained to the highest standard while being fully conversant with the controls of this model. If you are in any doubt, talk with your crane hire specialist so that they can put your mind at rest.
